Building A Culture Of Freedom And Responsibility In The Workplace

The modern working environment, in today's offices, is relaxed and fluid, with a mixed workforce and a strong emphasis on work-life balance. Gone is the rigid style of thinking that reduced efficiency and failed to meet the challenges of the new era. As workplaces continue to evolve, so does the need to offer employees freedom. This concept, introduced a few decades ago, has found immense popularity in offices all over the world, from well-established companies to start-ups.

Why is freedom in the workplace important?

With the tremendous growth in technology, innovation and specialized roles, the modern work culture requires people to be highly adaptable and to take initiative as they progress in their professional lives, as well as in their culture teams.

Freedom is both relaxing and empowering. When employees are free to choose their working style, the working environment becomes more receptive, motivating and productive.

When companies expect high performance and added value from their employees, they need to give them freedom and create transparency and accountability.

Being transparent with employees and telling them what they need to hear is the only way to build solid understanding and trust.

Every individual has potential, the power to exceed expectations and perspectives. It's with a cool & friendly spirit freed from the shackles of policies, procedures, approvals and oversight, whatever they may be, that they feel free to unfold their innate potential.

While incentives and benefits are a motivating factor, what stimulates people is an equally stimulating set of challenges and teamwork.

A fair workplace is one where people feel comfortable and their efforts are valued.

Each individual has specific psychological needs that must be taken into account at every level - personal development and the exercise of self-direction. So a free working environment nurtures these needs and, through it, enables an individual to flourish - both personally and professionally.

In short, it's wise to say that freedom goes hand in hand with responsibility - employees who benefit from an open-minded work culture must be responsible for the kind of output they create. Freedom and responsibility go hand in hand, and it's essential to strike a perfect balance between the two at all times. Defining the limits of space in a workplace is not yet an absolute necessity.

So, «if you're lucky enough to be someone's employer, you have a ‘’moral obligation’’ to make sure people look forward to coming to work in the morning».

Out of the ordinary

«unusual, different, or strange : not what is considered to be normal but simple and singular».

The Art of Handmade: Why Craftsmanship Matters in Today’s World,

In an age dominated by standard industrialization, handmade products bear witness to the beauty of craftsmanship distinct to the individual. These unique pieces are imbued with the craftsman's skill, dedication and creativity, making each item a work of art. Unlike mass-produced goods, handmade items are often steeped in history and tradition, giving them a deep sense of belonging and authenticity, of added value.

The value of handmade products, Handmade products offer several distinct advantages:

  • Uniqueness: Each piece is unique and reflects the craftsman's personal touch.
  • Quality: Skilled craftsmen use superior materials and techniques, ensuring longevity and durability.
  • Sustainability: Many handmade items are made using environmentally-friendly practices and materials, helping to reduce the impact on the environment.

The skills required

  • Creating handcrafted products requires, passionately, a high level of skill and know-how. Craftsmen spend years perfecting their techniques and learning traditional methods handed down from generation to generation. This dedication to their craft results in products that are not only beautiful, but also functional and durable.

Quality

«Quality is free: the art of making quality certain».

«Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives, the cumulative experience of many masters of craftsmanship. Quality also marks the search for an ideal after necessity has been satisfied and mere usefulness achieved».

JOHN RUSKIN

In summary: material, price, satisfaction; that’s our commitment.

What is Quality? And why it matters.

Today, the word “quality” has a very different meaning from what it once had. It refers more to a vague idea of excellence than to a clearly defined notion of quality. For example, a quality item in today's world can be understood as an item made by a trendy brand, the perceived novelty of an item, or the finish of the materials used.

Items have become means of social signage, to the point where functional quality attributes are ignored.

The perception of quality has evolved over the years. In the Oxford Languages dictionary, “quality” is defined as “the degree of excellence of something”. For better or worse, what this “thing” is has always been a reflection of our times.

From “quality” to “real quality»

Today's society faces a major challenge: how can we put an end to the over-consumption of resources? The landscape of solutions for creating a balance with our environment is still unexplored. We

believe that one of the key areas of change will be our relationship to products as consumers. How “quality” is perceived is more relevant than ever.

Quality” should be defined in brutally practical terms as ‘the real, non-monetary value that is produced’. Real quality isn't shiny. Real quality is not a matter of social signals. Real quality is not smoothness. Real quality doesn't become obsolete.

Brands have the power to lead the way,

The higher the quality of an item, the longer it will last. So, to live more sustainably, we should maximize the quality of items, including objects. Items that improve with time and use. These items show that true “real quality” is a function of utility, durability and repairability.

In today's world, the “value” of products is measured in monetary terms, rather than in terms of the usefulness they bring to their users. These circumstances have turned brands and manufacturing

away from the old ideals of good design. Ideals that lead to what used to be called quality.  At Oliver Side Manufacture, we want to show that it's still possible to create real quality if you roll up your sleeves and get to work.
